The art of wood carving has a long tradition in this town which was, however, interrupted in the time of Communism. For the revival of the tradition, the Kolping Society of Slovakia got in contact with the federal wood carving school in Oberammergau, Germany. The Slovak teachers for the newly opened school were able to go through several weeks of practical training in Oberammergau and to round out their own skills. In the meantime the first course has started in Stiavnické Bane and 17 persons started an apprenticeship.
