16.728 EUR was raised from Bremer citizens and the OAV. This made a cooperation of BORDA with UNICEF and local donors possible. Altogether an amount of 43.013 US $ could be implemented in sanitation accommodations for orphans and elementary school students. Sincere thanks at this point to the donors.
Objective
The BORDA helps fund-raising campaign 2008/2009 objective is to improve the sanitation facilities for orphans and elementary school students in Cambodia by constructing toilets and decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS). Thus we want to safe both the health of the children and the environment.
Background
Mostly dominate disastrous circumstances in Cambodia: 78% of the population don’t have access to Sanitation. The consequence is that 230 tons of excrement, 2300 m3 urine and 8000m3 wastewater flow into the waters of Cambodia daily. An environmental and hygiene consciousness is barley existing, because there are just a few laws that contribute to a successful regulation. Since the contaminated water is used daily for bathing and washing there are yearly more then 10 million cases of disease and 10.000 cases of death. A lot of the victims are children.
The Situation in the schools

The sanitation situation in schools is disastrous, too. According to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) 9431 schools in Cambodia are existing which are visited by more than 3,3 millions students. 30% of the schools don’t have toilets and even 40% of the schools don’t have access to clean potable water.
The relief projects
Thanks to the donation from the Bremer citizens and the OAV Bremen e.V. it is possible for BORDA helps to realise two projects in two different locations this year.
The Chroy Jong Va primary school has more than 1000 students and only 13 functioning toilets plus 18 sinks for hand washing. The toilets are separated into 2 blocks which are spread on the school ground. The block with ten toilets is quite unpopular with the students, because the area around it is subject to flooding in the rainy season and thus it is difficult for children to access due to the high stairs. This school too fights against the bad hygiene- and sanitation circumstances. The septic tank that all the toilets connect to is cracked, leaking and mixes in with the seasonal flood waters.
BORDA will set up a better sanitation infrastructure. This contains the construction of a decentralized wastewater treatment system, a training in good housekeeping and a training in health and hygiene for the teachers and pupils.
The second project will be accomplished in the Sovann Komar (golden children) Orphanage. The Orphanage was founded in 2003. Sovann Komar takes direct care of 60 children. There are sufficient toilets but their wastewater treatment system is not functioning properly posing a risk to the children’s health and the Mekong river environment.
With the installation of a decentralized wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) it is possible for BORDA to make a grave improvement in the sanitation infrastructure.
