2009: "Borda hilft" - Progress in Cambodia

Chroy Jong Va is one of two project sites resulting from BORDA’s fundraising campaign „BORDA hilft! – School should not make sick“ 2009. Both projects were made possible by generous funds from citizens of Bremen, the Germany Asia-Pacific Business Association and cooperations with Unicef and regional partner organisations. Thus, the kick-off for providing with an appropriate decentralized wastewater treatment Plant for the Chroy Jong Va Primary School was in December 2009. Existing toilets only have had absolutely insufficient sanitation  facilities which not only threatens the health of pupils’ (and teachers’) but also harms the environment.

Even though, due to external constraints, the construction was slowed down a bit, the system’s function is already recognizable. The DEWATS plant, as far as being built, is attached to an existing toilet building on school grounds and could be observed explicitly by the pupils of the Primary School.

With great interest the pupils could examine in detail the current progress of the building activities so far. Members of the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) keep the pupils informed about the progress of the project. Completion of the DEWATS unit is planed for June this year.
This DEWATS unit can treat 5m³ of wastewater a day. An additional fiberglass biogas module will be added to the DEWATS to produce biogas for security lighting at night.
Additionally to this DEWATS unit health and hygiene education is as well important for pupils and teachers. For this school teachers and members of school management developed an SBS- Committee (SBS means School Based Sanitation), learning about Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. The conclusions of this training will be passed on to the pupils.

A DEWATS unit for the Sovann Komar Orphanage, in the district of Kien Svay in the Kandal province is the second project of 2009’s “BORDA hilft” fundraising campaign. The completion of this wastewater treatment unit is in its last stages of construction. 60 orphans and 60 members of support staff will soon benefit tremendously from this grave improvements. The previous wastewater treatment system did not function properly: The untreated wastewater fleow directly into the nearby Mekong River and poses a threat for the to the children’s health and the Mekong river environment..
This DEWATS, installed by BORDA and its regional partner organisations, can treat up to 15m³ of wastewater everyday. The manholes are raised up so that the space around them can be covered with soil and grass so the DEWATS will blend with its environment. The unit will provide improved sanitation and thus health conditions of orphans and support staff in a sustainable way.

Both SBS-projects aim to provide Cambodia’s next generation with working examples of sanitation facilities and systems, which help to protect both the health of children and the environment.

Please help us provide hygiene, safety basic sanitation services for school kids in Africa and Asia!
