Supported by generous funds from citizens of Bremen, and the Germany Asia-Pacific Business Association it was possible to install a DEWATS plant on the premises of the orphanage. The previous wastewater treatment system did not function properly endangering the health of both the children and the staff members. The children were most at risk from the unhygienic toilets that were a breeding ground for all kinds of germs. As well the nearby Mekong River was polluted by untreated wastewater discharging directly into the stream.
The commissioning of this wastewater treatment plant could be executed successfully by the end of February and BORDA personnel, contractors, teachers and members of orphanage administration and others took part.
Both, the children as well as members of staff benefit enormously from this great improvement of sanitary and health conditions.

Further progress is achieved in the second project of "BORDA hilft! – School should not make sick" 2009 fundraising campaign, the
Chory Jong Va Primary School in the Cambodian capitol Phom Penh. Supported generously by funds from citizens of Bremen, and the Germany Asia-Pacific Business Association and cooperations with Unicef and regional partner organisations the block of 10 toilets could be renovated. The DEWATS and discharge system is now completed. A fiberglass biogas component was added to the DEWATS to provide security lighting at night. However, external constraints are slowing other construction down, so the connection of DEWATS and toilets within short.
Additionally pupils learned about the importance and correlation of hygiene and health. As well an important contribution for "school should not make sick"!

Both SBS-projects (SBS: School based Sanitation) aim to provide Cambodia’s next generation with working examples of sanitation facilities and systems, which help to protect both the health of children and the environment.
